Turmeric and Black Pepper: Why One Barely Works Without the Other
Share
Hey.
You bought turmeric because you kept hearing about it. Maybe capsules, maybe a big bag of the powder, maybe you just started putting it in your food.
And honestly? You're not sure it ever did anything.
It probably didn't, and it isn't your fault. Most of the turmeric people take never reaches their bloodstream.
How turmeric with black pepper helps
The active part of turmeric is curcumin, and two things work against it. Turmeric root is only 2 to 5% curcumin to begin with, and your liver clears most of what gets through before it goes anywhere.
Black pepper fixes that. Pepper contains piperine, which slows that clearing down. In the study everyone in this field cites, adding 20 mg of piperine raised how much curcumin reached the bloodstream by 2,000%. Twenty times more, from pepper.
That's why there's black pepper in our turmeric gel. Not for flavour.
Once it's actually in you, here's what curcumin does:
- It's a strong antioxidant. Your cells take damage just from being alive, and this is better supplies for cleanup your body already does.
- It supports your body's normal inflammatory response. Inflammation is your repair crew. You want a crew that shows up and then goes home.
- A 2024 trial found something extra. Twenty healthy adults ate breakfast with turmeric and black pepper. The pepper meals left blood sugar lower afterwards, and people reported less hunger and more fullness.
One free tip: curcumin is fat-soluble, so pair it with something fatty. Yogurt, eggs, avocado, a smoothie with nut butter. Same jar, more of it gets used.
Ours is sea moss, turmeric root, black pepper, lemon, lime and spring water. Nothing else. Deep gold, warm and earthy, made fresh to order in Atlanta. Give it a month, because turmeric is a slow build rather than a switch.
Reasons not to take it
- Gallstones or a blocked bile duct. Turmeric makes the gallbladder contract, so skip this one.
- Blood thinners such as warfarin, Eliquis, Xarelto, Plavix or daily aspirin. Turmeric thins blood slightly, so talk to your doctor.
- Surgery coming up. Stop two weeks before.
- Any prescription medication. Piperine can raise the level of some medicines in your blood. Worth one call to your pharmacist.
- Low iron or anaemia. Turmeric binds iron.
- Pregnancy. Cooking with turmeric is fine; supplement strength is not.
